Founded in 1927, the Times Amateur Boxing Club has been at the centre of the local Kings Cross
community and wider Islington and Camden folklore since establishing itself in the area in 1958, with a
membership in excess of 300 people (ages 8 - adult). Throughout this period the club has earned a strong
reputation for helping young people in the area achieve personal and public success, including a number
of noted champions. The main focus of the club remains to support young people of all backgrounds and
sporting standards to gain fitness, confidence and self-discipline through sport and to help them achieve their
full potential.
Although the main focus of the club is its boxing programme, in recent years it has expanded to incorporate
football teams, youth-club centres, dance classes and acting classes. Above all it is the club's agenda to help
young people of all backgrounds and gender not just to achieve sporting and artistic success but to use these
experiences to help them forge fulfilling careers and lives not necessarily attached to the training undertaken.
The club's aim is to provide accessible diversionary activities in the community, improving social inclusion and
to raise educational standards. The programmes offered at the club are aimed to stimulate young people to
become more creative and to reach their full potential regardless of ability, improve self-esteem, achieve new
goals and to make new friends in a safe environment.
The Times ABC is run on an exclusively voluntary basis and is indebted to the selfless efforts of
respected Amateur Boxing Coaches Dave Ryan, Alan Kean and Colin Wilson, while the efforts of
Chairman Tony White and the much loved Treasurer Jimmy Farrell remain the heartbeat and driving
force of the club.
The Times is currently linked to the Metropolitan Police-funded MAGPI scheme targeting anti-social
behaviour in Islington. We are also linked with
PROSPEX, a youth counselling service based in the
Caledonian Road Area. We are also a member of the Islington Voluntary Action Council
(IVAC) and
The Amateur Boxing Association of England. We also have an
ongoing relationship with the 'Awards for
All' Lottery initiative and
The Cripplegate Foundation. The club has been honoured to receive the
extensive and ongoing support of former Minister for Sport and Culture,
Chris Smith, as well as MP for Islington South, Emily Thornberry.
Thank you for your support.
